が versus は in 'これ は/ が あなた の くるま です か。
I'm learning through a book at the moment, and in one place it says 'これ は あなた の くるま です か。’ and in another, it says ’あれ が あなた の くるま です か。’ Why is one が and the other は?
I know that これ is 'this' and あれ is 'that one over there'. Does that make a difference, or is it something else?

This is something that usually depends on the circumstance.
これは the は refers to the car in a more casual tone. So the person is casually asking if the car is yours
あれが the が refers to the car in a more serious tone ( it becomes the subject of concern ) , So the person is asking if the car is yours in a more dramatic ( serious ) tone.
