How would you interpret the word “copy” here? … Another link between the President and The Daily Worker was claimed by Mr. Scott. This is a letter written on Senate stationery and signed by Harry S. Truman, August 14, 1944. This communication to Samuel Barron, public relations director of The Daily Worker, expresses thanks for the copy of an article that appeared in the paper. How would you interpret the word “copy” in the last sentence? I think the sentnece should have been written as “..for a copy of article that appeared in the paper”. What do you think? Thanks! And it a part of a newspaper article taken from The Lacuna by Kingsolver.

Since there was no internet, the newspaper sent a physical copy (duplicate) of the article to the senator for him to keep as a souvenir. "The" specific copy which had been sent. "An" article, countable noun first mention.
