About "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
It's from the famous film "Forrest Gump".
I 'd like to know if there is a similar saying / motto in English before the film? Thank you!
BTW, how could a box of chocolates be of very different flavors? I mean chocolate is always chocolate ...

I have only heard people say 'life is full of surprises'. Nothing comes to mind regarding a quote or motto. As for the chocolates it means the assorted kind, where inside the chocolate could be strawberry,  coffee, caramel, hazelnut, etc. Just looking at them you wouldn't know what was inside.
