What's the difference between 'blackmail' and 'coerce'? What's the difference between 'blackmail' and 'coerce'? and is there any words that are similar to these two?It is under the topic about industrial espionage. The context goes: Additionally, they try to coerce them by forcing them or threatening by giving them trade secret of their company they used to work for. Furthermore, some rival companies blackmail their employees or their competitor company by threatening to tell the personal secrets unless their share confidential information. I figure that blackmail might be a part of coercion because they both related to threatening but blackmail is more specific that is about giving out personal secrets.That's my opinion on these two words. Please do correct me if I understand it wrong. Thanks a lot!

"Blackmail" involves coercion by the use of (or the threat to use) compromising (note the meaning of this word: "revealing an embarrassing or incriminating secret about someone) information to damage someone's reputation, career or family. Coercion is frightening someone into doing something by force (actual violence or torture) or threats (blackmail is one of many threatening techniques; threat of violence is another technique).

Blackmail (noun) is the action of demanding money from a person in return for not revealing personal information that would hurt the individual. Blackmail can also be a verb. To coerce (verb) someone is to persuade them to do something by using force or threats, or to obtain something by the use of force or threats. Typically, to blackmail someone implies that you have a piece of information about them, which you are using to get the person to do something for you. To coerce someone, alternatively, is to make someone do something by use of threat (ie threatening that you would hurt someone's family in a vague way). You could use blackmail to coerce someone into doing something.
