What's the difference between тогда, затем & потом? Where to use them?

1) "Тогда" is very similar with "when".This is an adverb which indicates when the action happened or shows indefinite time
Example:
Это было тогда, когда грянула война.
Tогда ( много лет назад) я не знал русский язык.
2)"Затем"-it is the adverb that indicates the time of action. In the context it can be described like that : затем=после чего-то(after something)
Я сделал уроки и затем(после этого) я пошёл гулять.
3)Потом-is also the adverb and it's very similar to "затем". You can ask a question( как скоро?, когда?) and the response can begind with the answer "потом"
Когда ты приедешь за мной?- Я приеду за тобой потом
Сначала подумай, а потом скажи.
BUT REMEMBER THAT "ПОТОМ" can be also union word.Usually it happens with a following combination of" и "and", "a")
Не хочу ходить в школу, и потом у меня времени нет.
That's all I think! Learn hard!

Hi, I hope it might help.
If I`m wrong Тогда (Then, in that case) we will try a different approach
Тогда(at that time) I live in New Yourk
We add some pepper затем(after, then) we start to stew the vegetables in the meat juice to make them tasty.
We added pepper затем, чтобы(in order to) to get better taste.
We add some pepper потом we start to stew the vegetables in the meat juice to make them tasty.
I`ll do it потом(later on)

Думаю, "тогда" - синоним "затем", но " затем" употребляется, когда указывается порядок действий. Как, например, в английском "First... then". Then в этом случае можно перевести " затем". А "потом" имеет значение "after that" или "later". Ну, а вообще это слова-синонимы.
