Alex, they're similar, but not the same. "Conhecer" is just to know something, is a cerebral thing. "Saber" includes conhecer, but goes beyond. Someone who "sabe" is a wise man. Then, "saber" involves some skill, in general. But could be used just as "conhecer" (know). Then, "saber" is more powerful than "conhecer".
