- 경험하다: experience (relatively formal). Rare in daily conversations. - 겪다: go through, undergo, experience, meet with (usually something negative, or a person sometimes). - 견디다: endure, withstand, bare with a hardship, pain, etc. - 참다: endure, suppress, hold back. 겪다 is a very common word for experiencing something, like "go through" in English. 경험하다 is similar, but suggests an event or period of time more easily definable than with 겪다. 견디다 and 참다 are both commonly used and share the sense of enduring something. 견디다 is more for withstanding an external, hostile force. It can refer to physical things withstanding weight, heat, and other effects. 참다 is for people only, and means enduring something bad, or suppressing one's own reactions like a laughter or tear (웃음을 참다). Examples: - 지금껏 경험하지 못했던 두려움을 느꼈다: I was fearful like I've never experienced it before. - 고생이 어떤 것인지는 겪어 본 사람만이 안다: Only those who suffered through it know what hardship is like. - 이 풀들은 수년간의 가뭄에도 잘 견딘다: These plants easily endure several years of drought. - "참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움": "The Unbearable Lightness of Being".
