for our birthdays -For our birthdays, let's tell our friends and family to donate money to a charity. Why is 'for' used in this sentence? I think 'on our birthdays' is better. I can't understand why the writer used 'for'. How about 'for our birthday presents'? And this is another sentence. -We should tell our friends and family that, for our birthdays this year, we want to give to others.

The writer used "for" because of the phrase "What do you want for your birthday?". The answer would be "For my birthday, I want a bicycle" So when he says "for our birthdays.." he means that he wants to receive something. Your phrase, "on our birthdays" would mean that specifically on the day of their birthday, they would tell their families and friends the present they want to have(which would be too late, because everyone will have bought and brought a gift already ;) ) To make the sentence exact, the writer could indeed have used "For our birthday presents". But he makes the sentence more elegant by assuming that we know they are talking about presents.

Ah, this is a good question! "For our birthdays, let's tell our friends and family to donate money to a charity." Using 'for' here implies that in place or instead of a birthday present you would like them to donate money. You can think of it as "As for our birthdays, let's tell our friends and family to donate money to charity." 'As for' means 'on the subject of'. If you used 'on' instead of 'for' then the sentence would mean "on the day of our birthdays..." that implies you would tell them on your birthday rather than before hand. Which wouldn't be helpful because they likely would have already purchased birthday presents! ^-^
