Meaning of 놀다
I learned that the word 놀다 means "to play". Can this word be used to mean "play a game" and "play an instrument"?

For example:
저는 경기를 놀아요.
저는 기타를 놀아요.

Are both of those sentences correct?

no!!!!!
놀다 means play but it doesn't use object, and this contains "do nothing","take a rest" " be lazy" "moving..)

오늘은 하루종일 재미있게 놀았어요. today i played fun whole day(broken english but if directly translate it...)
basically means this.

오늘 학교가 놀았어요 (today  the school closed (maybe because of holiday) )
그는 회사에서 놀고 있다( he doesn't work in the work)
그는 지금 일이 없어서 놀고 있다(because he doesn't have work to do, so he is jobless)
그는 한 때 좀 놀았다. (he was acted under the shadow before like mafia)

And
경기를 하다/  오늘 축구 경기를 했어요. or 축구를 했어요. or 오늘 축구하고 놀았어요 (all means i played soccer today)
                           (oh! ↑this one also means that today had soccer match)

기타를 치다/연주하다(play guitar)
