I'm pretty sure it is d) mendacious : liar. For "X : Y", the pattern here is "X is an adjective that describes all Y's. All Y's are X." "Erudite" is an adjective that describes all scholars. All scholars are erudite. ("Erudite" means "having much knowledge.") "Mendacious" is an adjective that describes all liars. All liars are mendacious. ("Mendacious" means "often tells lies.") Not all hermits are necessarily remote, a hermit could live nearby. Not all travellers are necessarily meandering, some travel straight and rapidly to their destination. Not all conquerors are necessarily vindictive. Some of them kill and plunger. Some are reasonably nice, sometimes because they want the conquered people to keep thriving so that they can tax them. My pattern fits erudite : scholar, so it is probably the right pattern, and it fits mendacious : liar but doesn't fit any of the others.
