How would you interpret this sentence? How would you interpret this sentence ‘Because there's only us two and in the world there's all the rest of them’ in the second to last passage? Does it mean the ‘us’, only two persons, has to confront all the other people in the world? Thanks. It’s from A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway (Chapter 21). the context: "Oh, darling!" she came back from wherever she had been. "You mustn't mind me." We were both together again and the self-consciousness was gone. "We really are the same one and we mustn't misunderstand on purpose." "We won't." "But people do. They love each other and they misunderstand on purpose and they fight and then suddenly they aren't the same one." "We won't fight." "We mustn't. Because there's only us two and in the world there's all the rest of them. If anything comes between us we're gone and then they have us." "They won't get us," I said. "Because you're too brave. Nothing ever happens to the brave."

Yes, my interpretation is the same as yours. There is a phrase--I don't know what to call it, it is less than a "saying" but more than a "colocation"--"us against the world." A Google Books search turns this up an example in a book about preparing for marriage: "Since our wedding day we have held an 'us against the world' attitude in our marriage. We look out at the world and build prorelationship thoughts that foster emotional safety in our marriage and set the stage for everyday bliss." I don't know if that's good advice but certainly couples in love often feel that they have created a circle of safety that protects them from an uncaring or hostile world. In your passage, she feels that the danger from "the rest of them," from the rest of the world, is constant, and that if they let their guard down even for an instant--if a fight weakens their relationship--their relationship will be over. They are trying to keep out of the grip of "them," the rest of the world. She worries that "they," the rest of the world, will "have us," and he says "Don't worry, they won't get us."

Its implying that the love they share is more dignifying than the rest of the couples. Your analogy is correct but I don't think its about confronting, its more like showing their confidence ........
