It's a little difficult to know exactly without having the context around those phrases, but I will try my best from what it can mean. Are these from one episode or several? Context can make the interpretation much different. I would imagine many of these are said in irony or jest, knowing the type of show that Friends is. #1- I would think this is a jest made by someone to interpret someone's sentence, somewhat like saying "what he meant to say was..." or "in other words..." 2- if this were a literal interpretation the person is saying they are planning on finding a girlfriend/boyfriend who drinks way too much alcohol and wears leather, someone they expect will give them many things to complain about; I would imagine this is irony and the person doesn't actually intend to do this 3- to 'cushion the blow' is to decrease the amount of pain/hurt from an impact of some action 4- I am not sure about this one, as I am not sure if they are talking about an actual cell or a figurative cell; generally, I think this would mean that the person wants go back to some former place/time where some action was allowed that is not allowed in their current situation (may or may not actually be 'smoking' depending on context) 5- karma is an idea that 'you get back what you put in': if you treat people well, you will be treated well. Or if you treat someone bad, at some point later something bad will happen to you. The person saying this is stating they would not be able to enjoy something because it would create an imbalance in their karma which they'd have to pay back. Whatever it is, they feel they cannot enjoy it because it is so good they feel they would be obligated to do good to pay it back. Context is super important, as language use is so flexible that these phrases could mean different things in different situations! Do you have the name of the episode (or season/episode numbers) so I can watch it? I'd be able to give a much better interpretation.

1. loosely here means "approximate", "not exactly", "somewhat" 2. tattooed alcoholics = low class people, like those you see in seedy bars. 3. when someone hits you and you put a cushion in front of you, the cushion absorbs much of the force. So it means "to soften". 4. cell means the place where you are kept in the jail. 5. karma is a Buddhist concept in which things happen to you because of your actions. For example, if you do good deeds, you get good things happen to you and vice versa.

Haha, Filipe you are getting ahead of yourself. I think friends is an excels t resource to learn American English as it is rather neutral and "uncomplicated", not to mention highly watchable. BUT, almost none of the slang you have asked about will be at all useful in your daily life. So, don't get ahead of yourself and concentrate on normal day to day style of communication before you jump on the slang wagon Peace

I would watch whatever you enjoy. No resource is bad if you enjoy it. If you're watching in the language you want to learn you will get lots out of it.

I suggest you not use this silly TV show to learn English. There are lots of excellent resources available. Sitcoms are not one of them.
