Depending on that context to be 'around' something is that you have experience or have been working in that situation for a long time.
"How long has Dave worked here?"---"He's been around a while, like 8 years."
Also, someone who's been 'around' in a general context is someone who's done a lot, seen a lot, and lived a full life.
