고장하다 / 깨지다 / 망가지다 (고장하다 -> 고장 나다) * 고장(n) - state of being out of order. We never say 고장하다. There is 고장(이) 나다 (vi - become broken or out of order), 고장(을) 내다 (vt - break something by misuse), or simply 고장이다 (is broken/out of order). 고장 by itself is sometimes used to indicate such a state, as a sign placed on a machine. * 깨지다(vi) - passive verb of 깨다 (vt - break, shatter) and 깨뜨리다 (same meaning but more explicit than 깨다). We use 깨다 to mean shattering or cracking a physical thing (window, vase). 깨지다 therefor means "to get shattered or broken". These words are sometimes used for abstract things like relationships. * 망가지다(vi) - passive verb of 망가뜨리다 (vt - break, ruin, render out of order). 망가뜨리다 usually means breaking the working mechanism or structure of things more elaborate than simple objects like a cup or vase. 망가지다 is the passive of 망가뜨>리다. 망가뜨리다 is close in meaning to 고장 내다 (and 망가지다 to 고장 나다), but it is more colloquial. 고장(故障) is a hanja word, so they sound more formal. Examples: - 차가 고장 나서 카센터에 보내야 한다. The car's not working. I must take it to a shop. - 날아온 돌에 창문이 깨졌다 - The window was shattered by a flying rock. - 얘한테 주는 장난감은 금방 망가진다 - Toys we give this boy get broken in no time.
