I've seen written in "Der Kleine Prinz": "Was ist das für ein Ding da?".
Is it also correct if I were to write: "Was für ein Ding ist das da?" ? Would it have the same meaning?

yes, both sentences are correct.
moving "für ein Ding“ in front of the verb puts emphasis on "Ding".
