If you want to know if your phrase is understandable, it is, it is perfectly understandable for any Spanish speaker. Sí es válido usar "Hay cinco personas en mi familia", pero es más correcto usar "Mi familia está conformada por cinco personas". Ambas son comprensibles para cualquier Hispano.

¡Hola! Somos cinco personas en mi familia. Está mi padre, mi madre, una hermana mayor y un hermano menor. Tengo dos abuelos, tres tíos y cinco primos. También, tenemos un perro bonito y un gato grande.

También tenemos un bonito*** perro y un gato grande. * not right ** better *** it's more fluid or musically better this way P.S.: I know the oppositte of mayor is menor and of grande is pequeño but we usually say hermano mayor (grande sounds weird) and hermano pequeño (menor sounds too polite). It doesn't work as good with plurals though but still right. E.g. Tengo dos hermanas mayores y tres hermanos menores/pequeños. I'd say it's because we see the youngest as the littlest.
