"Our team was completely.............. played by the team from Wales."
Which is correct 'outplayed' or 'overplayed'? Why?

The correct answer is "outplayed." The verb "outplay" means "to play better than." You may have seen the prefix "out" in other words, like "outsmart," as in "He was a clever man who used his strategical genius to outsmart his opponents." As you may have guessed from the sentence, "outsmart" means "to defeat or get the better of someone by being clever or cunning." We can see from these two examples that the prefix "out" means to out-do someone at something; e.g. to do it better than them. "Our team was completely outplayed by the team from Wales" means that the team from Wales played better than us, and therefore (we assume) won against us. Hope this helps :)

And overplayed so you know means when someone makes something seem more important than it is.
give undue importance to; overemphasise.
