A "life" often means to fit into society and do the things that other people do.
A "half-life" often means to do only a few of the things that other people do and to miss the most enjoyable aspects. For example, a person may have a job, but no friends. They go to work, but don't go to restaurants with friends, don't go to movies with friends, and don't visit friends to have coffee and cake.
Here, a "strange half-life" means that he is not living a normal life. He feels he is missing enjoyable aspects that most people take for granted.
