What's the difference between 'something of the sort' and 'the sort of something'? Thank you.

In English, we don't say "the sort of something." We say "the sort of thing." = "the type of thing" = "the kind of thing" ("Did you hear that the ghost of a murderer lives in this house?" "Aaaah! Don't say that! That's the sort of thing that scares me!") "Something of the sort." = "something like that" Normally used when you are replying to someone. ("Did you hear that the ghost of a murderer lives in this house?" "Yeah, I heard something of the sort. People like to spread rumours.") Hope this helps! :)

Hello! "of the sort" would mean "like that" or "similar too". "the sort of" means "of that kind" or "in that manner" So these two phrases are very similar.
