Question from a movie "Captain America: Civil War" Scene: In the fight between Iron Man's team and Captain America's team, Iron Man is talking to Hawkeye and Wanda, a huge parking structure in the background. Clint Barton: Hey, man. Tony Stark: Clearly, retirement doesn't suit you. You got tired of shooting golf? Clint Barton: Well, I played 18, I shot 18. Just can't seem to miss. [Clint shoots 3 arrows at Tony who dodges and shoots them down] Tony Stark: First time for everything. Clint Barton: Made you look. [Wanda moves bunch of cars behind Tony and throws them at him] Question: What does Clint mean by "made you look"?

Hi Yoshinori, When someone says 'made you look', it means that they have tricked you into looking in a different direction to distract you or as a childish joke. For example, my little brother and I are camping in the forest and telling scary ghost stories. When I can see that he is feeling afraid, I look behind him and make my eyes wide as if I see something behind him. When he looks and nothing is there, I say "haha, made you look!"

OK Clint has just boasted about his skill at golf saying that he just can't miss a shot. He then shoots three arrows at Tony who shoots them down and says "theres a first time for everything" which is a put down i.e. Tony is sneering at Clint for missing him. Clint's riposte is "made you look" this is a way of covering up his embarrassment at missing Tony by pretending that he was not actually trying to hit him or that even though he acknowledges that he didn't hit Tony, he did achieve the result of getting Tony to react by dodging the arrows. This is what "made you look" means in the context of American male aggression where a smart remark is used as part of the battle of male egos. Clint may not have hit Tony but he is still "one up" on him, i.e. he is asserting his superiority even though he missed. This kind of dialogue is commonly seen before sporting competitions like boxing where the protagonists try to "psych out" or unsettle their opponents before the match hoping that their insults will distract and annoy their opponents and reduce their competitive edge. It is commonly known as "trash talk" but in clinical psychological terms it is part of the phenomena known as "The Male Pretence" in other words some men would rather die than appear weak to an opponent.
