a water boy is someone who supplies a sports team or other group with drinking water

I thought of the Adam Sandler movie. :) A "water boy" is someone who stands on the sidelines of a sports event and provides drinks (water, gatorade...) to the players. He is literally the boy with the water. I think there are also 'gofer' duties ("go fer this...go fer that"; fer=for) if you're a water boy.
