What's the difference between questionnaire and survey?

I do not think that they are completely synonymous. The Oxford dictionairy defines them as quoted below: survey: 1 a general view, examination, or description. 2 an investigation of the opinions or experience of a group of people, based on a series of questions. 3 an act of surveying. 4 a map or report obtained by surveying. Questionnaire: noun a set of printed questions, usually with a choice of answers, devised for a survey or statistical study.

Survey is a research method while questionnaire is the type of data collection tool. you can sya " I'm conducting survey research but you can use questionnaire to collect data for a survey research.

Those two words are synonymous. They are used interchangeably in the literature. In some cases a survey might relate to a questionnaire that is distributed by different modes (paper, telephone, internet) whereas a questionnaire might refer primarily to the paper mode. It isn't always the case however. Hope that makes sense?!
