- You accept something without question,that is when you take something for granted. When you question something that is accepted as true ,then you are not taking it for granted. When we expect something to be available all the time and forget that we are lucky to have it , we are taking it for granted. When somebody gives something (usually something valuable or worthwhile, for free) that person "grants" something. "To take" in this context means to perceive, assume or understand. "To take something for granted" therefore means you assume that something will always be given to you, or it will always be there, even if you make no effort to keep it or care for it.
