To me "[people] are socialized in different ways" typically is used to mean that people are socialized differently developmentally, rather than that they "play different social roles in the society". So for example, humor that appeals to a certain cultural group may not appeal to another, or that humor that is targeted to a certain class of people may not appeal to another.
