What does the verb “peruse” mean to you? No fair to look in a dictionary or any reference other than your brain. Can you give an example and tell us what “peruse” means in the example? Please use an example that you imagine or remember being used in “real life”. You can look in a dictionary after you’ve written your answer. I’m asking because I had an interesting discussion with a Romanian friend about this word. It seems there may be more than one meaning to this word. I want to see which meaning or meanings are commonly used. Thanks in advance!

To me it means to casually look through something or through a place at a leisurely pace. You can peruse a menu or peruse through the mall or a park. Basically, to go through something in a relaxed way.

peruse is a weird word. it has 2 almost opposite meanings. both meaning mean to read through something. its can be used to mean "to read through something thoruoghly and in great detail" but you can use it to mean "to read through something casually", as guidedogsaint has suggested. as odd as that sounds it can be used in both ways and would be correct

I know the dictionary meanings of the word but don’t use it at all, and very rarely hear it. There are clearer better words.

To look at reading material in a fairly casual way. I perused the menu. I gave the menu a quick perusal and chose my usual dish.
