Why do many IELTS students fail? A student came to me to ask for help. She had been practicing with ChatGPT for a year, but she still got a band score of 6. Talking to yourself or to a robot won’t help you develop the social and communication skills you actually need. Nor will it help you properly assess what went wrong. Some students struggle with coherence. Fluency and Coherence refers to your ability to connect and organize your ideas clearly using appropriate transitional words and cohesive devices. For example, I asked a student to describe a time when she went to a museum or an art gallery. She answered by saying that she loves music and concerts. Does this make sense logically? Would you go to a museum or an art gallery to talk about your love of music and concerts? You can memorize a lot of vocabulary and still fail the test because you lack coherence. IELTS isn't just about knowing a lot of words.
