Essay: Best way to improve public health? In recent years, public health has been a huge concern in countries around the world. Various methods to improve public health have been devised, including increasing the number of sports facilities. Some, however, view this as ineffective and pointless. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument. First, those who sniff at the idea of increasing the number of sports facilities claim that it would be too costly and the money would be better spent on other things such as bettering health care. The many sport facilities left unused and rusted in a number of public parks are examples of how more money would be largely squandered if the government decided to increase their number. Additionally, countless new diseases have emerged recently and it is wiser to invest money on studying the roots of these problems and how to mitigate their potential setbacks rather than waste money on installing these rarely-used facilities. However, such reasoning is fundamentally flawed. Prevention is always better than cure. Sports facilities, if put in the right place, will encourage more people do to physical exercises and lessen the number of people at risk of becoming obese. Obesity is in effect the cause of numerous debilitating diseases such as diabetes or heart attack. The cost to treat these ailments tends to be astronomical and it would create an even bigger burden on society if there were more people afflicted by these. What’s more, actively taking part in sports is a proven way to stay healthy. If properly instructed and encouraged, more and more people would not hesitate to participate in sports with the help of these available sports facilities as they are free to access. In conclusion, it is imperative to install more sports facilities if the government wants its citizens to stay healthy.

Essay: Should we preserve languages? Whether or not to appreciate and preserve the diversity of languages around the world remains to be in dispute. Some are inclined to believe that life would be better off if more languages faded into oblivion. This essay will discuss both views of the argument. First, the disappearance of languages unquestionably goes along with a loss of culture. In my country for example, there are many languages spoken by people of ethnic minorities which are on the verge of extinction and many native speakers of these languages turn to learn Vietnamese instead. Since translation is oftentimes incapable of transferring the meaning of the original languages, a lot of poems, proverbs or even tradition and costumes are now disappearing as not many people can fully understand them. What’s more, many people nowadays, especially those who are proficient in languages, earn money working as translators or interpreters. If there were fewer languages, they would soon be made redundant. The problem of unemployment would be made even more exacerbated. However, there is certainly no disputing the fact that languages are merely a means of communication. The existence of thousands of languages around the world helps nothing but to make it more difficult for people from different parts of the world to understand each other. If there were fewer languages on Earth, the spread of information and ideas would be made much faster and further than ever before. What’s more, if the language barrier were to be pulled down, much more people would be willing to travel and to seek more investment opportunities in this interdependent world. Development in worldwide economy, therefore, would be propelled and the problem of poverty existing in many countries would soon be eradicated. In conclusion, there is no reason to fret if more languages die out.

First notebook entry: Introducing myself I'm learning German just for fun because I have a bundle of free time now as I have 4 months writing my final thesis for my university. My native language is Vietnamese but I'm also fluent in English and Spanish. Hope that we can help each others and learn from each others, too.
