Hello! My name is Sylvia and I'm a native English speaker from the United States. I am currently studying linguistics at university, which means I understand how languages work. I also have over five years of teaching experience and can help you improve your English through explanations of grammar or casual conversation, whichever you prefer! Aside from languages, I'm also very interested in culture, travel, dance and filmmaking, and I'll be happy to discuss these topics or anything else with you! I speak German, American Sign Language, Bengali, Syrian Arabic, and Moroccan Darija at different levels, so if one of these is your native language, I will be extra-equipped to help you!

I am a patient and kind teacher, but I will also push you to speak the language yourself and notice your own mistakes. You should never feel embarrassed or afraid to speak! My philosophy is that when we make mistakes, we learn the most, and I am here to support you. Whether you know absolutely no English, or are looking to improve your understanding of fast-paced, casual English, I am here to help!

Your native language determines how understand different grammar concepts, so I will tailor my explanations of English grammar depending on your native language. I have two years of experience teaching English to native Arabic speakers, and I've found that this is the most effective approach. I tend to have a speaking-heavy approach, because I believe this is the more basic and important aspect of a language, however, I also use writing and reading as tools to improve speaking. But I am always looking to design the lesson for your specific needs. Consistent practice is key, so I may ask you to practice a few minutes every day instead of giving one long homework assignment.
