What is wrong with my sentence? I was studying and the answer in the text book was "In 1782 King George III appointed William Pitt prime minister of Great Britain." I wrote "In 1782, King George III appointed William Pitt as the prime minister of Great Britain." I'm not sure why I can't have comma after the year, and why "as the" should not be in the sentence.

As far as I can see the usage of "as the" fits grammatically wise but it's not necessary to put it there. Also we shouldn't normally put a comma directly after a year in this case. I guess because a comma is used to separate different ideas and here they are the same.
