You meet a Malayali. Their name is written K. R. Suresh. You ask what the letters stand for and get an answer involving a village, a father and a house. You ask for their surname and get a confused look. Here is how Kerala names actually work — and it is genuinely different from most naming systems in the world. Traditionally, Kerala does not use hereditary surnames the way Europe, North India or China do. A full name is built from three elements: the house name, the father's or a parental name, and the person's own given name. The first two are usually reduced to initials. K. R. Suresh might expand to Kizhakkeveettil Raman Suresh. Kizhakkeveettil is the house. Raman is the father. Suresh is the person. In a state with a great many people named Suresh, the K. R. is the disambiguating information — the initials are not decoration.
