فقال: «اتخذ حفر القبور صناعةً، تُريح الأحياء من جثث الأموات المكدوسة حول منازلهم ومحاكمهم، ومعابدهم.» قلتُ: «لم أرَ قَط جثث الأموات مُكردسةً حول المنازل.» فقال: «أنت تنظر بعين الوهم، فترى الناس يرتعشون أمام عاصفة الحياة؛ فتظنهم أحياء وهم أموات منذ الولادة، ولكنهم لم يجدوا من يدفنهم، فظلُّوا مُنطرحين فوق الثرى ورائحة النَّتَن تنبعث منهم.»

قلتُ وقد ذهب عني بعض الوَجَل: «وكيف أُميز بين الحي والميت، وكلاهما يرتعش أمام العاصفة؟» فقال: «إن الميت يرتعش أمام العاصفة، أما الحي فيسير معها راكضًا، ولا يقف إلا بوقوفها.»

واتَّكأَ إذ ذاك على ساعده؛ فبانت عضلاته المحبوكة كأصول سنديانة مملوءة بالعزم والحياة، ثم سألني قائلًا: «أمتزوجٌ أنت؟» قلت: «نعم، وزوجتي امرأة حسناء، وأنا كَلِفٌ بها.» فقال: «ما أكثر ذنوبك ومساوئك! إنما الزواج عبودية الإنسان لقوة الاستمرار. فإن شئت أن تتحرر طَلِّق امرأتك وعِش خاليًا.» قلت: «لي ثلاثة أولاد، كبيرهم يلعب بالأكر، وصغيرهم يلوك الكلام ولا يلفظه. فماذا أفعل بهم؟» فقال: «علمهم حفر القبور وأعطِ كل واحدٍ رَفْشًا، ثم دعهم وشأنهم.» قلت: «ليس لي طاقة على الوحدة والانفراد. فقد تعودتُ لذة العيش بين زوجتي وصغاري، فإن تركتهم تركَتْني السعادة.
