Grammar: Repetition and Echo Words — "Slowly Slowly", "Small Small", "Tea-Shea" | Understanding Indian English #130
الوصف
Listen to everyday Indian English and you will hear words said twice: "Go slowly slowly." "She bought small small gifts for everyone." "Give one one chocolate to each child." "Hot hot samosas!" You will also hear rhyming echo words: "Let's have some tea-shea." "No need for all this drama-shama." To a listener unfamiliar with them, these can sound childish or careless. In fact, they are systematic patterns shared across many South Asian languages, carried naturally into English.
What you will learn:
• Repetition for intensity
• Repetition for gradualness or manner
• Repetition for distribution and variety
• Echo words: "Tea-shea" and "Drama-shama"
• Tone and register
• Shared South asian patterns
• Practice: decode the phrase
• Listening strategies
• Self-check questions to test your ear
Level: B1–B2. Self-study: listen, then take the quizzes.
