THE BACKWATERS കായൽ (kaayal) - the lagoon, a brackish lake system running parallel to the coast വേമ്പനാട് കായൽ - Vembanad Kayal - the largest കെട്ടുവള്ളം (kettuvallam) - houseboat, historically a rice barge, from കെട്ടുക (to tie), because the planks were stitched with coir rope rather than nailed വള്ളം (vallam) - small country boat ചുണ്ടൻ വള്ളം (chundan vallam) - the snake boat raced at Onam 2. THE HILLS മൂന്നാർ - Munnar - tea country; the name is മൂന്ന് (moonnu) + ആർ (aar), three rivers തേയില (theyila) - tea, the leaf; തേയിലത്തോട്ടം (theyilathottam) - tea estate വയനാട് - Wayanad; തേക്കടി - Thekkady, the Periyar reserve; ആന (aana) - elephant 3. THE COAST കോവളം Kovalam, വർക്കല Varkala, ബേക്കൽ Bekal കടൽ (kadal) - the sea; തിര (thira) - a wave; കടൽത്തീരം (kadaltheeram) - beach 4. THE BUILT HERITAGE ഫോർട്ട് കൊച്ചി Fort Kochi, with its ചീനവല (cheenavala, Chinese fishing nets) THE SENTENCES THAT GET ANSWERED ഇവിടെ നിന്ന് ആലപ്പുഴയ്ക്ക് എങ്ങനെ പോകാം? (ivide ninnu aalappuzhaykku engane pokaam?) - how do I get to Alappuzha from here? ഈ ബോട്ട് എത്ര മണിക്കാണ്? (ee boat ethra manikkaanu?) - what time is this boat? ടിക്കറ്റ് എവിടെ കിട്ടും? (ticket evide kittum?) - where do I get a ticket? എത്ര സമയം എടുക്കും? (ethra samayam edukkum?) - how long will it take? ഇവിടെ അടുത്ത് നല്ല ഭക്ഷണം എവിടെ കിട്ടും?
