ഉണ്ട് and ഇല്ല in Full — Tenses, Tag Questions and Sounding Sure | Learn Malayalam #12
الوصف
Existence and possession in every tense, the two-word tag question system, and a use of ഉണ്ട് most courses never teach.
You get ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു (there was), ഉണ്ടാകും (there will be) and their negatives, plus the identity vs existence split carried into the past. Then ഇല്ലേ and അല്ലേ, which replace the whole English tag-question system. Last, ഉണ്ട് attached to a verb as assertion, the Malayalam equivalent of English 'I do study'.
Words and phrases in this class:
ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു (undaayirunnu) – there was; had
ഉണ്ടാകും (undaakum) – there will be
ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു (illaayirunnu) – there was not
ഉണ്ടാകില്ല (undaakilla) – there will not be
ഇന്നലെ മഴ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു (innale mazha undaayirunnu) – there was rain yesterday
അവൻ ആശുപത്രിയിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു (avan aashupathriyil undaayirunnu) – he was at the hospital
നിങ്ങൾ വരും, ഇല്ലേ? (ningal varum, ille?) – you'll come, won't you?
നിങ്ങൾ മലയാളിയാണ്, അല്ലേ? (ningal malayaaliyaanu, alle?) – you're a Malayali, aren't you?
ഞാൻ പഠിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് (njaan padikkunnundu) – I really am learning
അവൻ വരുന്നുണ്ട് (avan varunnundu) – he is definitely coming
ഞാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് (njaan shramikkunnundu) – I really am trying
വരുന്നുണ്ടോ? (varunnundo?) – are you coming?
In this class:
• The full tense set of ഉണ്ട് and ഇല്ല
• ആയിരുന്നു vs ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു: who someone was vs where they were
• ഇല്ലേ and അല്ലേ, two words that do the work of English tag questions
• -ഉണ്ട് on a verb: the assertion that makes you sound sure
