🌑 El Tren de las 3:33 🚆

Samuel odiaba viajar en tren, pero aquella noche no tuvo más opción. Su auto se había averiado y debía llegar a su ciudad antes del amanecer. Al llegar a la estación, notó algo extraño: el único tren disponible era el de las 3:33, una hora que le resultó inquietante. Subió al vagón y encontró el interior vacío, excepto por un hombre al fondo que lo observaba sin parpadear. El tren arrancó con un sonido metálico que resonó como un lamento.

A medida que avanzaba, Samuel sintió un frío creciente. Miró por la ventana y se dio cuenta de que el paisaje no cambiaba. Siempre veía el mismo bosque oscuro, como si el tren avanzara en círculo. Se levantó para preguntar al hombre del fondo, pero cuando llegó allí, el asiento estaba vacío, y en su lugar, había una nota: "Este no es un tren cualquiera. No intentes bajarte".

El corazón de Samuel se aceleró. Corrió hacia la puerta y trató de abrirla, pero estaba sellada. De repente, una voz metálica por los altavoces dijo: "Próxima parada: el olvido". Miró su reflejo en la ventana y vio al hombre de antes mirándolo desde el otro lado del cristal, ahora con una sonrisa macabra. El tren nunca llegó a su destino. Al día siguiente, el jefe de estación encontró el vagón completamente vacío, excepto por una nota pegada en la ventana: "El tren de las 3:33 siempre necesita un nuevo pasajero".

こんにちは、Japanese with Yoshikoへようこそ！皆さん、お元気ですか？日本の学校では7月21日頃から夏休みに入りました！今回からは日本の教育制度や学校生活についてお話ししたいと思います。初回は「日本の教育制度の概要と夏休みの過ごし方」です。本日のフレーズは「シャキッと」です。意味を知らない人はどういう意味か想像しながら聞いてみてくださいね。

日本の義務教育は、小学校6年間、中学校3年間です。通常、ほとんどの子どもが小学校前に保育園や幼稚園に通います。高校は3年間で、97%の人が高校に進学します。高校卒業後、短大や専門学校、大学などの高等教育機関に進学する人は83.8%で、2021年度は過去最高でした。
日本の学校は4月から始まり、3月に終わります。小学校から高校までの夏休みは、だいたい7月後半から8月末までの約5週間です。冬休みは12月末から2週間弱あります。春休みは3月末から2週間ほどです。

今から、私が小学生から高校生だった時の夏休みの過ごし方をお話しますね。
私が小学生だった時は、夏休み中、毎朝6時頃に起きて町内のラジオ体操に行ってました。
ラジオ体操とは1930年から続く夏休みの伝統的なイベントです。ラジオ体操の音楽に合わせてみんなで体操をします。これをすると、眠気が吹っ飛び、とてもシャキッとするんですよね。地域差はありますが、私が住んでいた町では合計3週間以上ラジオ体操の日があり、欠かさず参加していました。もちろん、参加は任意で、大人も参加できます。参加後、カードにスタンプをもらい、スタンプを一定以上集めると、最終日にお菓子や文房具などのご褒美がもらえたので、それが楽しみで毎年参加していました。現在は、ラジオ体操を開催しない地域や日数が減っているという状況らしいですが、それでもまだ続いているようです。日中は時々学校のプールで泳いでいました。宿題は最初の2週間で終わらせるタイプで、夏休みの後半はゆっくり過ごしていました。
中学生になると、バレーボール部に入り、夏休みも週5ぐらいで練習がありました。もちろん、学校の体育館には冷房がないので、夏休みの練習は本当に地獄でした。
高校も同じくバレー部だったので、中学生の時と同じような過ごし方をしていましたね。
日本の学校では中学から高校まで部活に入っている生徒が多く、長期間の旅行をする人はほとんどいないと思います。私も中学生になってから家族で過ごす時間はかなり減りました。週末も半日から一日、練習や試合があり、1日遊んだり、遠くに旅行する暇なんてありませんでした。でも、ほぼ毎日チームメイトと過ごすので、チームメイトとの絆は深まりましたね。

どうでしたか？きっと皆さんが過ごした夏休みと結構違っていたのではないでしょうか。今日のフレーズは「シャキッと」でしたね。主な意味は2つあり、1つ目は「 緩んだ気持ちなどが、引き締まるさま。また、姿勢や態度が引き締まっているさま。」です。2つ目は「軽い歯ごたえがあり、それでいて歯切れのよいさま。」です。2つ目の意味では「シャキシャキ」という形で使うことが多いです。では、例文です。「新しいスーツを着るとシャキッとした気持ちになる。」「このシャキシャキとしたレタスの触感が好きなんだよね。」

JAKE: Where should we take a vacation this year? Let’s 
decide soon.
MELISSA: Well, I’d like to go somewhere warm. How about
the beach? Or we could rent a cabin on the lake.
JAKE: You want to go to the beach, again? I want to ski 
this winter. How about a compromise? What about 
traveling to the Alps in Europe next April? We can 
find a ski resort on a lake.
MELISSA: Oh, we’ve never been to Europe before! But I don’t 
know if it will be sunny and warm then. I need to 
do some research first. That will help me make up
my mind.



LANGUAGE NOTES
• Decide is a useful verb to express choice. The idiom “to make up my mind” also 
means “to decide”: “There are so many choices in this menu. It’s going to take awhile 
to make up my mind/decide.” You can finish this sentence with either the idiom or the 
verb “decide.”
• How about This phrase presents an alternative. This phrase can be followed by a 
subject plus a conjugated verb or by a noun: How about we go swimming? / How about 
a movie tonight?
• Many verbs express opinions: to think / to believe / to suppose / to assume, etc. They 
are not all synonymous. For example, “to suppose” and “to assume” express that the 
speaker has a preconceived idea: He came back late from work, so I assumed that traffic 
was bad. /I suppose that may not have been the case, and that he might just have had a 
lot of work.
