空中帝国に住む人間は、空中帝国で生まれて、空中帝国で死んでいくことを くりかえしていくうちに、
「人間の住む場所は、空中帝国だ」と信じてうたがわなくなりました。
しかし、カンパネラは こどものころ、たしかに赤毛の女の子を見ました。
『森』にも人間は住んでいるのです。

『森』におり立ったカンパネラは、突然、背中のジェットを噴射させてとびあがりました。
おどろいたのは、まわりの研究者たち。
「みなさん、ごめんなさい」
みんなの制止も聞かず、カンパネラは隊からはずれました。
いきさきは決まっていました。
湖のほとり、あの赤毛の女の子がいたところです。
望遠鏡で女の子を見つけた日から２０年間、ずっとこの機会をうかがっていたのでした。

半日もすると、ようやくそこに着きました。
あのとき望遠鏡で見たまんま、湖のほとりはコケでうめつくされています。
