In Britain, serious crimes such as robbery and murder, are tried in court by a judge and jury. The purpose of the trial is to examine the evidence and determine whether somebody is innocent or guilty of the crime that they have been charged with. That is the jury's decision. If the person is guilty, the judge will then decide the correct punishment for the crime.

여러분, 혹시 한국의 직장 생활 하면 떠오르는 것이 있나요? 네, 바로 회식입니다. 한국에서는 직장 동료들과 함께 식사를 하는 자리를 자주 가지는데요. 단순히 밥을 먹는 게 아니라, 함께 시간을 보내면서 친해지고, 업무 스트레스도 풀 수 있는 기회가 됩니다. 그런데, 처음 회식에 가면 조금 낯설 수도 있어요.
🔹 “회식? 그게 뭐예요?”어느 날, 한국에서 일하게 된 마크 씨는 팀장님께서 “오늘 저녁에 다 같이 회식할 거야. 꼭 참석해!”라고 하시는 말을 들었습니다. “회식이요? 그냥 같이 밥 먹는 거 아닌가요?” 마크 씨는 궁금했죠.
퇴근 후, 동료들과 함께 고깃집에 갔습니다. 상사분이 “자, 한 잔씩 하자!”라고 하시며 소주를 따라 주셨습니다. 옆에서 한국 동료들이 “건배!”를 외치며 술잔을 부딪치더군요. 마크 씨도 따라 했습니다. 그런데, 술을 받을 때 동료들이 두 손으로 공손하게 받는 모습이 보였습니다. “아, 이게 한국의 술자리 예절이구나.” 마크 씨는 자연스럽게 두 손을 모아 잔을 받았습니다.
🔹 “회식은 왜 하는 거죠?”회식은 단순히 밥을 먹는 시간이 아닙니다. 평소에 회사에서 업무 이야기만 하다가, 회식을 통해 서로를 더 잘 알게 되는 시간이 되죠. 한국에서는 동료들끼리 가족처럼 지내는 문화가 있어서, 함께 밥을 먹고 술 한 잔 기울이며 대화하는 것이 중요하답니다.
🔹 “회식 자리에서 꼭 술을 마셔야 하나요?”요즘은 술을 강요하는 분위기가 많이 줄어들었어요. 예전에는 “한 잔만 더!” 하는 문화가 있었지만, 요즘은 본인이 원하지 않으면 정중하게 거절할 수 있습니다. 마크 씨도 “저는 술을 잘 못 마셔서요”라고 말하자, 팀장님이 “괜찮아, 편하게 즐겨!”라고 하시더군요. 대신, 음료수를 마시면서 대화를 이어갔죠.
🔹 “회식이 무조건 즐거운 건 아니에요”사실 회식이 부담스러울 때도 있습니다.
늦게까지 이어져서 피곤할 수도 있고,
가고 싶지 않아도 참석해야 할 때도 있죠.그래서 요즘은 점심 회식이나 카페에서 가볍게 차 마시는 회식도 많아졌어요. 변화하는 시대에 맞춰 회식 문화도 조금씩 달라지고 있는 거죠.
마크 씨는 몇 번의 회식을 경험하면서 나름대로 방법을 터득했습니다.1️⃣ 술을 강요받지 않고, 자신이 편한 만큼 즐긴다.2️⃣ 대화를 나누며 동료들과 친해지는 기회로 삼는다.3️⃣ 회식이 끝난 후, 너무 늦지 않게 자리를 빠져나올 타이밍을 본다.
이제 마크 씨는 한국의 회식 문화가 조금 더 익숙해졌습니다. 처음에는 어색했지만, 지금은 회식을 통해 동료들과 더 가까워졌고, 직장 생활도 훨씬 즐거워졌어요.
