Yep, native speakers would either say: "I heard that her birthday was coming soon.' Or, commonly also: "I heard that her birthday is coming soon.' "I  heard that her birthday came soon,"-- this would be incorrect as it would imply that magically her birthday arrived sooner than expected. :)
