Est-ce que is the french for the englis "is that"
For example: est-ce que c'est une pomme ? (Is that an apple?)
And qu'est-ce que is the french for "what is this?" Or "what is that?"
Enjoy !

"Qu'est-ce que" is the equivalent of "what" in English, and the same as "que" = "qu'est-ce que tu fais ?/que fais-tu ? " (what are you doing? )
"Est-ce que" is for yes or no questions, and can be omitted altogether = "est-ce que tu viens à la fête ? / viens-tu à la fête ?" (are you coming to the party?)
Hope this helps 😉

- Est-ce que:
Est = is
ce = it
que = that
So "est-ce que...?" literally means "is it that...?"
Eg: Est-ce que tu as faim?
Is it that you're hungry? (But in English you say "Are you hungry?")
- Qu'est-ce que:
Qu' (contraction of "que" since it preceeds a vowel) = what (like in the phrase "Que veux tu manger?" which means "what do you want to eat?")
est = is
ce = it
que = that
So "qu'est-ce que...?" literally means "what is it that...?"
Eg: Qu'est-ce que tu aimes manger?
What is it that you like to eat? (But in English you say "what do you like to eat?")
