The first one means they suddenly realised their current view on a moral issue was 'wrong' so changed their mind, maybe because of reading something, listening to someone, watching a TV programme etc. They second one means they found the 'real' meaning of the film. Sometimes films seem to be just entertainment and then you realise they are about a more significant matter.
