Is there a difference between (ask about) and (ask after) in these sentences: She is asking about you. She is asking after you.

As far as I know they mean the same thing. 'Ask about' is much more common in US English.

For me, asking about someone is requesting information. I want details about that person - are they married, do they have children, where do they work? Asking after someone is just politely enquiring whether they are well. I would tell a friend that another friend asked after them if they said, "How is X doing?"
