مُعلم محترف5 key realities about learning a second language. 🔍
These realities apply to adult learners and, when understood, will save a lot of time and frustration.
1. It will take a lot longer than you think. ⌛
Depending on the language, the average person needs 600 to 3000 hours of practice over several years to reach fluency in speaking and listening.
2. You will always make mistakes. 🫠
The good news is that native speakers usually don’t mind and are supportive of your efforts.
3. You’ll never feel as fluent as you do in your native language. 🏖️
One major reason is that language is deeply connected to culture.
4. The memorization of lots of grammar rules is a waste of time. 🛑
Native speakers don’t know most of their own grammar. (See Dr. Stephen Krashen’s research on language acquisition.)
5. There is a “language gift.” 💡
Like any skill, language learning comes easier to some. While one person may need 1,000 hours to reach a B1 level, another may only need 200.
Learning a second language requires patience and perseverance. But remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.
Embrace it and enjoy the ride! 🚀
