Hi everyone!
Please help me understand the difference between the words "purple" and "violet" when it comes to colors. Do both words refer to the same color? Can they be used interchangeably? If not, how are they different (e.g., which one is warmer/darker/closer to blue/red etc.)?
The problem is that both words mean pretty much the same in my native language (both are translated as "фиолетовый" into Russian), which is why I wonder whether native English speakers see the difference between these two words.

Hi Anastasia !Purple and violet are close, but not identical.
Main difference:
- Violet = more blue-based, cooler, closer to the color of the visible light spectrum (a “pure” spectral color)
- Purple = a mix of red and blue, warmer, not a spectral color
Simple way to see it:
- Violet → bluish 💙
- Purple → reddish ❤️
In practice:
- Native speakers often don’t strictly distinguish them in everyday speech
- “Purple” is much more common and used as a general term
- “Violet” sounds more technical, precise, or poetic
Examples:
- “She wore a purple dress” (natural, everyday)
- “Violet light has a short wavelength” (scientific)
Conclusion:
They overlap a lot, but:
- not fully interchangeable
- “purple” = broader, more flexible word
- “violet” = more specific and cooler in tone
