There is no "yes" or "no" in Thai!
In English, you can answer close-ended questions with a "yes" or a "no".
For example,
1) - Do you want to eat?
- Yes!
2) - Do you like to do homework?
-No!
However, in Thai, such questions are answered differently. Let's take a look!
- กินไหม
gin mai ? (translated literally as, eat?)
- กิน
gin (eat)
Let's take a look at the homework example!
- อยากทำการบ้านไหม (do you want to do homework?)
yaak tam gaanbaan mai
- ไม่อยาก
mai yaak (translated literally as, don't want)
The take home message is that in these cases, use the action word (the verb) to answer the question! For "yes" repeat the verb that the speaker said to you, and for "no" say ไม่___ (mai ___), putting the verb in the empty slot, with mai giving the meaning of not doing/wanting etc.!
