"Cornelius Vanderbilt was dining there and was served some thick, soggy fried potatoes"
Can you explain to me the second sentence?
"....and was served some thick, soggy fried potatoes"
who is the subject?
I assume is "HE was served?" what form is it? Is it a passive form?
I woud have said "potatoes were served to him" but probably "to serve" has a specific rule...
Can you explain the grammar rule?

It's in the passive voice because it's not important who performed the action. What's important is what happened to the subject.
