Could you please help me with this exercise?
Why is there the in the sentence “…by catching rats and the mice” instead of no article? Could it just be a mistake in the exercise?

Yes. It's certainly a mistake.

It should just be catching rats and mice!

It's definitely a mistake. It should read "...by catching rats and mice..."
