Question for native English speakers! How would you describe a painting of soft tones? (Soft tones painting, light color painting). I mean the most common expressions! Thanks!

Hi, in Australia, we would say a painting in pastel hues. Hope this helps!

"Pastels" are colours that are light or pale or soft in tone and this includes light or soft blues, reds, pinks, greens etc. So you could say "a painting that uses pastels" or a painting that uses pale/soft/light colours [or tones].

Hi Iryna, It depends if you want to be literal or more metaphorical. For metaphorical, I rely on imagery, pick something from nature that everyone knows and compare the color to that. For example, some Claude Monet paintings have very soft tones, and I might say the blue he uses is soft like the early morning sun, or the yellow is light like a newborn chick's feathers. It can also be something that's not literally a color, but evokes a certain feeling, like "the green of the grass is soft like a refreshing breeze on a hot summer day." If you want to be literal, the below posters are absolutely correct.

Pastel colors (light pink, light blue, light purple, light green). I would maybe say things like: "I like the soft pastel colors of this painting" A painting in the style of artists like Monet, Renoir, and Matisse is called an "impressionistic painting" and the artists are "impressionist painters".
