They are opposite ends of the same action. I borrow a book from the library. The library lends the book to me. I borrow a pen from a friend. The friend lends the pen to me. It is similar to the relationship between "buy" and "sell." I buy an apple from the supermarket. The supermarket sells the apple to me.

The lender is on the giving side and the borrower is on the receiving end. Lending = temporarily giving something to someone. You can think of how you may borrow money from the bank and pay it back later, which makes the bank the lender.

Hi Daniel, The main thing to remember with 'borrow' and 'lend' is who the subject of this action is. When I lend something, I will temporarily give it to someone. At the same time, the person who I am lending it to, is borrowing it from me. Tom is lending his pen to Lucy. Lucy is borrowing Tom's pen. I hope that helps!

Hi Daniel! The person who temporarily gives something "lends" it. The person who temporarily receives something "borrows" it.
