What do these words mean in the sentence below?
Once a DNA adduct is formed, a major *determinant* of its *persistence* depends on the ability of the cell to repair the altered DNA.
My opinion --
Determinant= reason
Persistence= existence?

It might be easier to reword the sentence slightly:
"a major part of (the adduct) continuing to exist will be if the cell can or cannot repair the DNA."
Determinant = event or thing that decides something
persistence = continues to be for a long time
