I am from Tennessee. My family would call these people solicitors. I have actually never heard them called hawkers or barkers.

Also American. I'd call that person a barker, but I don't think most Americans know that word anymore. It's quite dated, in part because we don't have the sort of society anymore where people stand outside a shop trying to get customers in that way.
